4 out of 5 stars Great reference for families of railfans   September 18, 2008

Our son is an absolute rail junkie, and nothing makes him happier than seeing a real steamie (Diesels don't count apparently, we have those at home). We found this books while visiting a rail museum (which we found by chance) when we were on vacation. On that trip we also learned of a bigger better one that was near by, but because we didn't know to plan time for it we didn't get to visit it.

I'm really excited we did find this book, it includes all sorts of tourist lines all over the country. We were surprised to learn of two steamie lines within a hour or two of home. Not to mention many more all over the country. We're looking forward planning to add rail museums and train rides on future vacations. Hopefully with advance planning we won't have near misses with other great museums and train lines.

The other reviewer has a point, in that the information is very terse. Giving a simple description of the company, however with the websites listed you can generally find much more, and more up to date information.

2 out of 5 stars 2007 Tourist Train Guide From Kalmbach   November 7, 2007

I have been buying the Empire State Railway Museum's Tourist Train Guides since 1999. These have been published by Kalmbach, so I expected this to be a continuation of this series(Number 42). However, this is not the 42nd Annual Guide but something similar from Kalmbach which is half the size of the previous Guide(277 pages vice 454) at the same price. I don't know why Empire State is not doing this after 41 years and I felt that this publication is not up to the standard they set. Gone is the description of Locomotives/Rolling Stock, which I particularly liked. Also missing is Special Events. Many attractions list nothing but Address, Telephone, E-Mail, and Website. In my opinion the 2006 Empire State Railway's 41st Annual Guide(2006 Edition) is a much better choice than this new Guidebook since it has much more information and is only one year old.
