While ostensibly a travelogue, this video is also an exceptional treat for railroad buffs as it examines the railroads of Ireland with a particular emphasis on their history. As might be expected, spectacular shots of breathtaking scenery abound, but the narration also provides copious information about the vivid past of particular railways as well as technical specs on their current rolling stock. As Ireland is a small nation, this video covers practically its entire rail system, from the Dublin Area Rapid Transit used by daily commuters to the train lines that span the fields and mountains of the entire island. Footage shot in restored stations shows how the Irish rail system is a working combination of the historical and the high-tech. Of great interest to railroad aficionados will be a brief visit to the yard of the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland, where vintage trains await restoration, and shots of special "steam excursions" in which magnificently maintained steam engines once again come chugging down the rails. While this video is worth watching just for the beautifully shot scenery, the level of detail given in the narration ensures it will warm the heart of any true railroad fanatic. --Robert J. McNamara
