Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com
From 90-year-old, still-operating steam locomotives to 180-mph high-speed trains, France offers a variety of railroad adventures. This 57-minute tape takes viewers on a number of routes (from a mostly exterior point of view), such as a 33-kilometer steam locomotive ride from Tournon to Lamastre that lasts two hours, due in part to a water stop. There's a trip on the electrified line between Perpignan and Le Tour de Carol that takes viewers along a precarious mountainside route into snowcaps. Finally, viewers come back down to sea level for a ride inside the high-speed TGV trains, which connect urban areas with unprecedented speed, comfort, and profit. The narrator shares much technical information with viewers (route history, details on equipment, refurbishing, and mode of operation) that will delight the train buff. He is also quite candid regarding the downslide of interest in the older routes, predicting the abandonment of some by the mid 1990s, so future travelers may want to supplement this tape with more updated information. --Kimberly Heinrichs
