Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The Chicago & North Western was well-known for its Chicago-Twin Cities 400 passenger train. Encouraged by the success of the Twin Cities 400, the North Western established an entire fleet of regional streamliners that brought people from Madison, Milwaukee, Green Bay, Wisconsin's North Woods, Upper Michigan, and southern Minnesota into the big city of Chicago for a day of shopping or business. The yellow-and-green 400 Fleet had a loyal following of passengers not served by rivals Burlington Route and Milwaukee Road. "Ride the 400", "Speed, Luxury and Safety", "400 Miles in 400 Minutes" and "The Train that Set the Pace for the World" were successful advertising slogans for business and vacation travelers. Coverage includes the Twin Cities 400, Minnesota 400, Peninsula 400, Flambeau 400, Kate Shelley 400, and commuter streamliners.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An enthusiastically recommended addition to any railroad buff's personal reference collection.   May 5, 2008
Iconographix is a publishing house dedicated to providing personal, academic, and community libraries with thematic compilations of historic photographs drawn from diverse pictorial archives from around the country. This is especially true of such visual railroad memorials as John Kelly's "Chicago & North Western: Passenger Trains Of The 400 Fleet" offers an historical 'window in time' perspective on the Chicago-Twin Cities 400 commuter passenger trains that plied their way through such upper Midwest communities as Madison, Milwaukee, Green Bay, Wisconsin's North Woods, Upper Michigan, and southern Minnesota. This was an era where the Chicago & North Western offered their passengers speed, luxury, safety, and $1.25 dinners. In addition to full-page black-and-white photos of the trains themselves, browsers will also encounter photographs of stations, advertisements, and railcar interiors. A superbly organized and presented archival volume, "Chicago & North Western" is an enthusiastically recommended addition to any railroad buff's personal reference collection.

2 out of 5 stars In Black & White   May 13, 2006

Disappointing. Not a single color photo in the entire book. While "The 400 Story" by Jim Scribbins has only a few color photos, it has an absolute wealth of information and is a better buy. The '400' fleet of the 40s and 50s had black roofs not green ones as so many think. You wouldn't know that from this book.
