Product Description Transport planning, infrastructure project evaluation and policy making, particularly at the urban level, continue to be important issues in the 21st century. Transport modelling requires mathematical techniques in order to make predictions, which can then be utilised in planning and design. This is the basis for improved decision-making and planning in the transport arena. Building on the tremendous success of the previous editions, the new Modelling Transport continues to be the state of the art text in its field. As before, this third edition provides comprehensive and rigorous information and guidance, enabling readers to make practical use of every available technique. Presenting the following features: * A substantially updated section on data collection techniques * An examination of the latest topical modelling approaches, including new material on Probit Model estimation (now possible in practice) and Mixed Logit specification and estimation * New treatment of joint time-of-travel and assignment modelling * Significant new material on Stated Preferences * Added coverage of travel time valuation and, importantly, of the valuation of externalities such as accidents and environmental effects This book is the leader in its subject area, and gives the reader a unique contemporary account of key transport modelling techniques and applications. As before, each subject is approached as a modelling exercise with discussion of the roles of theory, data, model specification, estimation, validation and application. Techniques are included for selecting the right level of analysis and detail for modelling purposes, as well as how to adapt existing tools to serve the needs of regular updating of models and plans. Graduate and postgraduate students in transport engineering and planning, practicing transport engineers, consultants, planners and professional societies, as well as government agencies and district and city councils will find this an essential and valuable text.

5 Stars for breadth, 4 for depth April 14, 2007 In Modelling Transport, Ortuzar and Willumsen touch on a multitude of subjects related to transportation modeling. The book introduces each step under the traditional 4-step transportation planning process in a separate chapter, in addition to topics such as discrete choice analysis. The way the topics are treated is perfect for someone with previous familiarity with the subject; it would be extremely difficult to hammer out all the details of transportation planning in a single 500 page volume. I would not recommend this book to the more inquisitive reader new to the subject as -in most cases- it may not explain why things are done the way they are. That said, I would strongly recommend it as a desktop reference for someone that may need a refresher on some of these topics from time to time. I would've given the book 4.5 stars if half stars were allowed.
Excellent text book December 18, 2002 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is a valuable resource for students, teachers and researchers. The coverage is broad within the subject area, whilst the material is both accessible and authoritative. This third edition includes valuable extensions and updates to the earlier ones. I am glad to recommend this text to my students at each of undergraduate (BEng/MEng), taught postgraduate (MSc) and research (MPhil, PhD)levels to support their learning and use of transport models. The book makes an especially suitable text for transport modelling courses at MSc level.
Just about the best book available on the subject April 5, 1999 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I find "Modelling transport" (2nd edition) to be the best available in its field. It covers just about everything a transport modeller has to know and benefits from one of its authors being an academic researcher and the other a consultant. Both are recognized worldwide as being renowned experts, and the fact that one has an academic bias and the other a practical inclination makes the end product just about unbeatable. In recent years it has been the only reference work I have needed to consult. The title "modelling transport" makes it clear that the book does not cover economic and other evaluation techniques. I think that it would be an even better product if it did, considering the close relation between a transport model and the economic evaluation procedure which should be applied to determining the benefits of the network modifications it models. Inconsistency between the model and the evaluation can lead one to doubt the results of the latter. Maybe this point could be addressed in the third edition.
Very clear and complete, therefore extremely useful. March 29, 1999 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I frequently use Ortuzar and Willumsen book (I have used both editions) and I think it is one of the best books in this field. It gives the fundmental basics of transportation in a clear and straight-forward way. For the cloth cover edition price, it is a good deal.
Excellent support for lecturing transport demand March 27, 1999 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The book describes all the basic elements of transport demand modelling in a comprehensible way, including recent developments on the different subjects. It gives detailed references pointing to the original sources and to directions for further reading. We have used this book as a main reading material for our MSc level Transport Demand course; specially for Trip Generation and Modal Split models.
