5 out of 5 stars The Host   September 19, 2008

Being a big fan of Stephenie Meyer's 'Twilight' series, I was excited to grab a copy of her first novel for adults, 'The Host'. And I'm happy to say I enjoyed this one so much, I was pleasantly surprised at the romance involved in the plot.

This novel was wonderful, it was hard to put down, especially towards the end. Classic Stephenie Meyer's style, it was pretty much squeaky clean. She found a way to keep Melanie & Jared from getting too intimate.

I like Wanderer, and the idea of how she almost becomes human living in this host, how she comes to love Jamie, Jared & Ian and even Melanie. Wanda begins to make connections with others living in the cave as well and considers them her family.

The stories she told about living on other planets were entertaining too. She was once a bear, a flower, a bat and a spider. It was creepy how these aliens take over the planet, live like regular humans and make sure to eliminate any real humans left. They have 'Healers' that heal all disease, 'Comforters' who act as counselors and give advice and 'Seekers' who find humans and use them as hosts. Yet for the most part, these aliens are against violence & claim to have made Earth a better place.

I enjoyed the plot, the characters were well written and I recommend this read. Even if you're not a big fan of science fiction, you might enjoy this one. It's a story about love, compassion & hope.

5 out of 5 stars A Really GREAT Book!   September 19, 2008

I have just finished reading this book for the second time. I wanted to re-read it to catch anything I missed during the first reading. It was definitely worth my time, and held up well the second time around.

I am a fan of the Twilight series, but I feel this book is better than the Twilight books. It has a Sci-Fi basis, but isn't loaded down with too much technical information. It is essentially about relationships, human and otherwise.

A VERY satisfying read, and I truly hope she is working on a sequel.

I noticed the same tendency in the Twilight series. Meyer over emphasizes a character trait until you begin to wonder if she thinks the reader won't be able to remember from one page to the next that the character is afraid/clumsy/self-sacrificing. The Host has an amazing concept. I think I would have liked it better if her editor had been a little more aggressive. Say by 100 pages or so. I struggled to finish the book and I hate to admit it, skimmed through a lot of it.

5 out of 5 stars Virtuoso Performance   September 19, 2008

I read this book on a whim because of what a friend told me, having had no prior experience with this author, and I was astounded. First, Meyer takes a body snatching alien and makes her into a sympathetic character. No small fete, but she also does so without trying to completely excuse the alien of all fault. Next, she creates a conflict that seems unresolveable, but without making either side absolutely evil or absolutely good. Much like the real world. Finally, she creates a most engaging love... quadrangle(?) that seems impossible to satisfy with all parties fulfilled... Then she fullfills it. This book is in my top five favorite books of all time, and definitely tops my list for this year. It takes some careful reading to get going, but the truly worthwhile is worth working for. If I have any complaint at all about this book, it is that I think it would've been more aptly titled "The Soul."

5 out of 5 stars What a great book!   September 18, 2008

I read all the twlight books. An I wasn't sure about this one. I have to say I thought it was great. Just as good as her other books. The characters were wounderful. You really got to know the main characters. I sure hope she writes a sequel to it.
