2 out of 5 stars Astonishingly Bad   August 17, 2008
0 out of 1 found this review helpful

Astonishingly shallow, grade-school characterization permeates this novel from first to last page. The storyline is predictable and the pace is molasses-slow. Many words, images, character actions and catch-phrases are repeated over and over again and display a profound lack, on the author's part, of any real skill at even college level plot development and character-building. Every character in the novel, including the men, seems to possess a 16 year old girl's hopes, fears, and aspirations. If this is an "adult" novel, I can't imagine what the young adult novels are like. Are they this bad?

Rowling is a literary genius compared to this writer at this point in her career.

Folks, this is really, really bad. It gets an extra star only because I finished it. Oh, and I found the first few dozen pages intriguing -- before I realized how simplistic every part of the novel was likely to be. Similar to another book I read recently, I just had to keep reading because I couldn't believe how bad it was. It was more exciting for me to wonder if it was going to get any better, then to pay any real attention to what I was actually reading. As I read, I kept wondering how this novel could manage such strong reader reviews on Amazon.

If you've any discernment at all, have formed even the slightest opinion as to what ISN'T good writing, then you've probably got enough sense to skip the really bad stuff. This is the bad stuff.

Don't believe the hype.

5 out of 5 stars Shiny Happy Parasites- A Review on the Audio CD's   August 14, 2008

This is a review on the Audio CD version of The Host by Stephanie Meyer, read by Kate Reading.

I have read Meyers other series "Twilight" and I didn't like it, but decided to give this book a try because I was intrigued by the storyline. Silvery luminescent beings invade our planet and attach themselves to our brains and take over our bodies. Our consciousness is basically muted forever by these "souls" although our memories remain for them to read like a how-to book. Some humans have resisted this invasion and gone into hiding, observing the souls and what they have done to our planet. The Souls use no money, they have no murders, no wars, they carry on the "hosts" life as if it was an ongoing play and they are the understudies. The human resistance is small, and the Souls wish to search them out and eradicate them for fear of retaliation or violence against them. Melanie is such a human, who when confronted by the Soul police or "seekers" tries to kill herself, because in her mind are secrets she doesn't dare let them have.
Wanderer, is the soul that is placed into Melanie, she is revered amongst her kind because she has inhabited many other Hosts, even existing on the original planet they came from. The surprise comes when she tries to access Melanie's memories, because Melanie is still in there blocking her at every turn. The story continues and we get to experience Wanderers discovery of what it means to be human, and Melanie's realization that not everything is as it seems. The audio CDs read by Kate Reading were not long and labored as some have reviewed the book as being, there was absolutely nothing boring about them. I blew through the 20 CD's within days, and the ending was completely satisfying and left me wanting more!

5 out of 5 stars Hooked on the host   August 14, 2008
I am an adult Twilighter....I love the Twilight Saga so I figured I would give The Host a chance and once again Stephanie's stories sucked me in. I couldn't put it down once I got about 100 pages in and finished the book in one day. It was really great! I hope she continues the series. Stephanie Meyer really is a gift to writing.

3 out of 5 stars It was ok   August 14, 2008
I tried and tried to love this book, but just couldn't. I am not a huge SciFi fan so maybe that was it. It was slow and it didn't move me. But was well written. It might of just been me.

3 out of 5 stars OK   August 14, 2008
Don't get me wrong, it's a good book. But to much "inner struggle" for me. Think this is more an female sci-fi book. Both the main carachters are female, and there is a lot of ethic and morale debattes going on inside the head.
