Very good reference book for the Lionel train enthusiast. August 24, 2006 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
This book is a must have for both the serious collector and casual Lionel train fan alike. The book gives good background information for each segment of Lionel train (locomotives, flat cars, etc.) as well as insightful commentary on each train car model. The pictures are excellent but if you are looking for detailed information on the parts and assembly of the trains then this book will not help.
That said, the book is highly recommended for the Lionel fan who wants to see the full lineup of Lionel trains produced (post-war) and their approximate values.
MOST COMPREHENSIVE YET October 25, 2004 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
THIS IS A WONDERFUL BOOK FOR THE LIONEL COLLECTOR AND ENTHUSIAST!
MY ONLY CRITICISM IS THAT SOME OF THE MORE IMPORTANT AND CLASSIC MODELS WERE GIVEN ONLY TINY PHOTOGRAPHIC COVERAGE. FOR EXAMPLE, THE PHOTO OF THE 773 HUDSON IS ABOUT 1/2" X 1" WHERE OTHER LESS IMPORTANT MODELS ARE GIVEN 1/8 OF A PAGE.
OTHER THAN THAT, THE BOOK IS GREAT AND VERY ENJOYABLE TO THUMB THROUGH!

This book is the best, there are none better! Joe Janocha
Simply the best October 16, 2004 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Without doubt this is the best new book for understanding Lionel Trains . The wealth of detail provided together with a rarity scale for each item should enable anyone to value their collection and ensure they know exactly what they own.
A Treasure for Lionel and Toy Train Enthusiasts October 10, 2004 16 out of 16 found this review helpful
Just received the new Lionel Reference book by Dave Doyle. This is a treasure. The book has more information packed between the covers than most any other toy train reference book. Outstanding pictures (kudos to his son for the pics) compliment the detailed descriptions of each item and the respective variations.
The book is well thought out regarding how the different subjects are arranged. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in Lionel trains.
My only regret is I did not find the pre-order form for the 1970-2004 edition ;)
Thanks David for a terrific addition to the LL (Licata Library).
