Lionel Train Sets 1945-1969 August 6, 2007 I think the book is real good, a little confusing but with time should be a great guide.
Doyle Does it Again June 10, 2007 It's a shame that Greenberg (kalmbach) decided not to update any of their books in a while, because they are top notch. This created a vacuum for those of us in the train collecting hobby that want the most current information. This book is wonderful. There are pictures of almost every set talked about, the language and writing style are great, and it is thorough. I hope Mr. Doyle writes a book on uncataloged sets too, as a recent book on that topic hasn't been written in over 10 years. The price of this book is unbeatable. Try finding it cheaper than on Amazon...and it shipped FREE.
A piece of Lionel history May 24, 2007 This very well researched and organized book on Lionel Train sets of the Golden Era is an absolute "must have" for the serious Lionel collector. It is chock full of good pictures and recommendations for the person who is just starting out or is a long time fanatic. The section on grading and how to recognize possible fakes or reproductions is especially useful. It continues the tradition of quasi reference books written and edited by David Doyle on the subject. If you grew up in the Lionel tradition, you will find yourself spending hours leafing through the descriptions and dreaming of layouts past.
Great Book!! May 13, 2007 Excellent guide to Lionel's sets (outfits) as they were called. All color photso of the complete sets and boxes. Don't miss this book if your a Lionel fan!
Indespensible April 4, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
If you're a Lionel Train collector then the Standard Catalog of Lionel Train Sets, 1945-1969, by David Doyle, is a book you'll want to add to your personal collection. Paying special attention to "boxed" sets, the book includes virtually every train set produced and sold during the post war era. No train is left out.
Complete with full color photographs and terrific descriptions of the box containers as well as the train components this would be an invaluable book to keep with you when you attend a train show or make the garage (yard)sale circuit.
I suspect that the values included for each train is a conservative estimate.
Wonderful.
