Story Holds Reader's Interest Despite Adolescent Dreaminess September 2, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This book was very enjoyable. I agree with some of the previous reviews about the author having Bella describing Edward's "absolute perfection" everytime she looks at him. That got tedious very quickly. And that brings me to a point where I disagree with those same reviews. They all complain that Bella talks like an adult and not like a teenager. While I found her dialogue and thought processes extremely adolescent. It reminded me of the over dramatization of all teenage girls about the boys they find dreamy. They swoon over them everytime the boy looks at them. They can't see any of the boys' imperfections because they are so blinded by their idolatry of them. This is Bella. If any other girl was Bella they would be annoyed as hell with Edward's constant insulting assumptions that they were somehow incapable of taking care of themselves through the most mundane daily tasks. Also his arrogance that he thinks he can tell her what she can and can't do, (and that she accepts it), is thoroughly obnoxious. Even though we know it's done out of his love for her.
And then I remember what I was like when I was a teenager, and I think about what I would have done if the boy I was over the moon about had told me he wanted me. I doubt I would have put up with any ordering around mainly because I hate being told what to do. But the constant dreamy eyed descriptions of perfection, and the ever present doubt of his feelings because your to ordinary for him are behaviors that most teenage girls could relate to. I certainly made a fool out of myself for one or two boys in my time (cringe).
I am no longer a teenage girl so those descriptions were a bit difficult for me to get through, but since I skim read most flowery descriptions anyway I was able to enjoy the rest of the story which was filled with engaging characters. The author witholds just enough information about the characters to keep you interested and wanting to keep reading to discover these secrets. I think this is an extraordinary first attempt at writing a novel and the author should be proud of her work. I hope everyone enjoys this book as I did.
compelling September 2, 2008 i don't know if i already wrote a review or not but this review is a bit of an update.
i wish there were more descriptions of people in the book as opposed to just being beautiful and sparkly, or that they did more than growl.
however, i am hooked on the series. meyers is very good at weaving action and romance together. i was very impressed by the action sequences that took place.
i also enjoyed the love triangle between bella, jacob and edward. she is really quite good at suspense.
i wanted to somehow extend my sympathies for her fifth book having been leaked onto the internet. how crushing for her. i feel sad. i read it on her website because i couldn't stand it any longer, and i must admit the writing is well done and the theory itself is compelling.
i also appreciate the references to older books like wuthering heights and anne of green gables. those were wonderful ! i now look forward to the book references and music references on every page. i think i even have a list started somewhere lol.
stephanie, thank you for adding some entertainment to some of my otherwise duller evenings during the week. i will be sad once i finish breaking dawn and i will look forward to the fifth book if it is published after all.
Excellent Book! September 2, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book will go on my all-time favorite list. I'm 39 and it was so good I read it in 2 days! It held my attention to the point that when it was over, I was disappointed. I've read the whole series which is also excellent, but this one is my favorite, and am looking forward to the upcoming Midnight Sun companion book which is Edward's point of view of the Twight story. Highly recomend this book to everyone of all ages!
A pretty good read. September 2, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I just finished reading Twilight for the second time. I do enjoy the book, but there are many things about the book that I find annoying. Bella is not my idea of a perfect heroine. Her whole existence is contingent on Edward and I just find that depressing. I find her character very one dimensional. She's not particularly interesting, or smart, or beautiful, or funny. She's just blah. I do however enjoy the character of Edward. I love the brooding types. I mainly just relate to the all consuming love that occurs in this book. I know what it's like to be in love, and I enjoy reading love stories. So if you're looking for a fairly entertaining love story, then I would recommend this book. If you're looking for flawless writing, characters, plot, then I would not recommend this book.
women's stuff September 1, 2008 Romance for women. Well written and captivating but....too girlish..;( PS: that is my husbands opinion..I gave him as a gift and he couldn't make it past 2/3 of the book
