Don't bother with this one November 3, 2006 68 out of 87 found this review helpful
After reading The Power of Now and listening to the book on CD several times, I greatly anticipated his subsequent books. I am very disappointed in his re-hashing the same information in his other books. In A New Earth, Tolle speaks with a strong disdain for his fellow humans. After a while I got tired of hearing about how "sick" and deranged we are. In Conversations with God, many of the same things are said, but you leave feeling uplifted and hopeful. Tolle's reading of his book leaves one feeling either depressed or irritated. Perhaps Tolle is so enlightened that he finds it difficult to be among his "unenlightened" brethren. To me, a sure sign of not being enlightened is judgment, and he seems full of that in this book. Not that I'm judging!
This is a primer for those just beginning on a spiritual journey. November 1, 2006 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
At the beginning of any new spiritual journey you don't have or get as many pieces of the puzzle as you might if you'd been on the path looking for a while. For those who are more spiritually "advanced", a more appropos book might be Robert Scheinfeld's new book, Busting Loose From the Money Game, a book that uses money as a segue into the whole issue of spirituality. People either love that book or they think Bob's a nut. But then, many newly discovered spiritual principles and laws of the universe are laughed at in the beginning. I invite you to compare the two books and make up your own mind. I've done that, and it's okay with me if I'm considered a "kook".
Smoking stuff October 20, 2006 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
This guy must have been smoking plenty in order to create his lofty and interesting theories. He has developed his ideas from his first book "The power of now". It's very entertaining for a student of zen buddhism to learn about Tolle's ideas and thoughts. For a thoroughly understanding of this text you will benefit learning about zen. Steven Hagen's "Buddhism Plain and Simple" is an excellent source that strips out Buddha's teaching into it's core, without BS.

"Awakening is a shift in consciousness in which thinking and awareness separate," I can't imagine that this could be said with greater elegance.
A review by my Ego October 4, 2006 29 out of 37 found this review helpful
As I was flying back to Vancouver tonight, I finished this book on the plane. I watched in amazement as my mind was waiting in excitement to just get home, sit down in front of my computer and write a review of this book. My mind almost raced at the thought of writing this review, collecting with amazing speed all the merits and shortcomings of this amazing book. But something was different. My excitement was tainted! My Ego, in his hasty planning for a grandiose review didn't even realize that it was being "watched". It happened before, but this time the "watching" went on for much longer and much deeper than before. Boy, my Ego is in trouble now! :) LOL
Reviewing this book is the ultimate reviewer's challenge. A book review, by its definition is a collection of opinions, counter-opinions and feelings about a book. Whose opinions are these? The Ego's. The irony of the Ego reviewing this book just cannot escape me. It is truly laugh-out-loud funny!
So, without boring you much, here's my Ego's opinion. (Please don't blame me, it's the Ego speaking...)
This was a great read. This book shows among many things that God truly has a sense of humor. He endowed humankind with the most highly developed and sophisticated brain, and then just for a twist thrown in the Ego, to make things much more interesting. This book shows how the ego took control of our true self probably many thousands of years ago and also outlines the excellent strategies it has to keep that stranglehold.
I recommend this book to everyone, with my whole heart. Read it and if enlightenment has started in you, this book will strengthen it. If not, this book might just be the catalyst to start the process.
I also do Insight Meditation every day. This book enhances and strengthens what I already learned from my meditation practice.
So there you have it. Best regards from my Ego. :)
