Brief but thorough, balanced and action-packed. April 17, 1997 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I read Ambrose's "Undaunted Courage" and had to read more. "Crazy Horse and Custer" was an excellent choice. The author treats both of these men in a very balanced way, including substantial information about their wives and their motivations. Given the volumes written about both of them, this book provides a relatively brief but thorough look at two very interesting lives
Absolutely A Great Read!! September 7, 1996 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This was one of the best, and most objective, biographical books that I've ever read. I came away with a much different appreciation of who Custer and Crazy Horse were as living, breathing human beings, with all the associated quirks. The parallels of their lives was fascinating. I kept asking myself questions that Ambrose subsequently answered. If you've read much about Custer, or Crazy Horse, and haven't read this book, you simply must
Excellent, balanced, and absorbing account of their lives and times. August 28, 1995 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you are interested in American history of the mid to late 19th century, particularly the American west but also the Civil War, this book is for you. It is a highly intellectually satisfying account of the subjects' lives as well as their times and culture. It puts to rest many myths of the two subjects as well as about the Indian wars. I was worried that it would have the usual romantic bias toward Native Americans, but I found it to be refreshingly balanced. Could not put it down! And I am not a historian, not do I often read history or other types of nonfiction
