Hard-to-use for first-timers. May 13, 2007 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
This book has detailed, practical, helpful information, if you study it before your trip, but we were "green" and needed quick help while we were travelling. (For instance, a list of B&B's listed by town.) Steves lists his information by area, like "London" or "The Cotswolds" but does not have a complete index where one can look up a specific town or attraction. However, the Introduction contains 46 pages of basic general info, crucial for first-time travellers, and worth the price of the book.
Rick Steves' Great Britain 2007 April 7, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I saved an amazing amount of money using this book, esp. lodging and travel. It also saved me lots of time looking up websites I needed. He gives a good route to use in Great Britain, but the reviews only cover things on those routes--if you need to know of places not on his routes you need to purchase another book. But his book is easy to use, and as I said- was well worth it. The money I saved was 100x the purchase price.
Nuts, bolts & honest opinions February 23, 2007 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
This is a wonderful resource book for anyone going to the UK for the first time - or the tenth! It explains the simplest, most basic things, some of which you never considered. Literally thousands of minutiae on money, taxes, rail and bus travel and tickets, where to get information, etc. Mr. Steves also packs into the books a multitude of honest reviews of attractions, from "Don't miss" to "Skip," and includes honest descriptions of places to stay, based on your preferences. He even has suggestions for where to go based on the number of days you have available. This is the best travel guide of any kind I've ever seen, and its format is such that you can throw it in your bag and take it along. A fabulous job!
