Boasting subsidiaries dating back to 1832 and routes Through the Heart of the South, the Seaboard reached the pinnacle of its prosperity during the 1940s, when war traffic kept its lines in constant demand. In 1967, the Seaboard merged with the Atlantic Coast Line to form the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad.
This classic book, first published to acclaim 30 years ago, covers both the Seaboard and its various predecessors and subsidiary lines. The Old Bay Line (Baltimore Steam Packet Company), Norfolk County Ferries, and the Seaboard's tugs are included in the marine section of the book. Over 20 pages of steam locomotive rosters and diagrams supplement the historical and technical text, and there are several hundred photographs of steam engines, boats, and trains.
