Uncle Sam's Locomotives: The USRA and the Nation's Railroads (Railroads Past and Present) Uncle Sam's Locomotives: The USRA and the Nation's Railroads (Railroads Past and Present)
Author: Eugene L. Huddleston
Publisher: Publisher: Indiana University Press; ; (August 2002) ISBN: 0253340861
The USRA locomotives are favorites of railfans?and deservedly so. Yet this is the first illustrated book about them.

During World War I, President Woodrow Wilson established the U.S. Railroad Administration. One of the USRA's first acts was to rationalize the railroad supply industry by standardizing rolling stock designs, including twelve locomotive types, at a time when customized designs were taken for granted. Uncle Sam's Locomotives looks at these magnificent locomotives and discusses how and why the designs were chosen, how they related to existing designs, what standardizing entailed, and how each performed.

Huddleston deals masterfully with the complex and often controversial relations between the U.S. Railroad Administration, the railroad companies, the major locomotive builders, and the numerous smaller companies that supplied locomotive accessories. Featured is a Picture Gallery of USRA locomotives?light and heavy Mikados, Pacifics, Mountains, Switchers, Santa Fes, and Mallets.

When Steam Ran the Clinchfield When Steam Ran the Clinchfield
Author: James A. Goforth
Publisher: Overmountain Press; 2nd edition (January 1, 1991)
During the steam era, a total of 128 locomotives saw service on the Clinchfield, ranging from the 39-ton 4-4-0 to the 500-ton Challenger.

This pictorial history begins with the Carolina, Clinchfield & Ohio Railway Locomotive Roster (nine pages), complete with number, builder, date, etc. Remarks such as ?retired? and ?scrapped? are noted along with other pertinent information.

The final two pages contain a ?Locomotive Engineers Seniority List for 1947,? which gives dates employed and promoted. Filling the pages between are more than 100 photographs of great variety, including a section of photos taken by ?Rail Photographer Extraordinaire,? Floyd A. Bruner of Marion, N.C.

There are also many early photographs, like the first passenger train to Altapass in 1906, and one of the Class E-3 (war surplus) purchased in 1947, as well as an interesting ?Before and After? that shows two photos of No. 1. The final series, titled Wrecks, includes one of the earliest known wreck photos, made in 1906, north of Forbes, North Carolina.
