Burlington's Zephyrs Burlington's Zephyrs
Author: Karl R. Zimmerman
Publisher: MBI Publishing; (May 2004)
This authoritative, illustrated history of the Zephyr fleet examines the trains, their motive power and landmark streamlined designs, rolling stock (including the Vista-Dome, generally considered the first successful dome car), and services. Dozens of black-and-white archival images and period color photographs depict Zephyrs along routes throughout the Midwest, Rocky Mountains, Pacific Coast, and Texas, as well as Burlington uniforms, dinnerware, stations and terminals, and interior views of cars. In the process, the book provides a dramatic visual account of train travel?s decline throughout the century. Also featured are period advertisements, and route maps, timetables, and menus. Hardcover

Chesapeake & Ohio's Pere Marquettes: America's First Post-War Streamliners Chesapeake & Ohio's Pere Marquettes: America's First Post-War Streamliners
Author: Thomas W., Jr. Dixson
Publisher: TLC Publishing (VA) (September, 2003)
C&O's subsidiary Pere Marquette Railway was used by C&O's pro-passenger Chairman, Robert R. Young, as a test bed for his ideas on how to cure the passenger train problem in America. He ordered two diesel-powered 7-car lightweight trains that went into service in mid-1946 on the Detroit-Grand rapids corridor. Over the next year they reversed the passenger losses on this line and actually built up traffic. The trains were the first to emerge all-new from the clogged car builder's shops after WWII. The new trains were of latest design and the on-board services were superb for a coach operation with hostesses, on-board passenger representatives, tickets delivered on the train, credit cards, no-tipping, etc. Many of these things were later tried on C&O's mainline trains, and the equipment showed the way for the huge re-equipping of the name trains on the old C&O in 1950.

Eventually affected by the continued erosion of passenger traffic, the trains experienced a slow decline, but lasted as a shadow of themselves down to Amtrak on May 1, 1971. The story is told in great detail from original documents and illustrated with great photos, many of them from C&O official files.

Heart & Soul of the Train Heart & Soul of the Train
Author: Mauris L. Emeka
Publisher: Apollo Pub Co; (October 8, 1999)
This is the author's second book about train travel. His first book, titled AMTRAKing, was published in 1994. An Amtrak train attendant for nearly nine years, Mr. Emeka writes in a uniquely sensitive way about his experiences on-board the train, the people he met, and thoughtful musings that visited his mind while on the rails. Heart & Soul of the Train has numerous photos and illustrations, and the author often goes beyond fond memories and enters into the hearts of those he met along the way. The book concludes with a timely and helpful section that deals with how to travel by train. Those less familiar with this mode of travel will especially appreciate the answers provided here in response to commonly-asked questions about train travel. Last but not least, Mr. Emeka, a retired Army officer, has a simple and accessible writing style that makes this book an easy and enjoyable read.

The author worked on-board Amtrak's western trains from 1989 to 1998. He wrote the book AMTRAKing in 1994, and has followed it with the 1999 publishing of Heart & Soul of the Train. A retired Army officer, he is married and lives with his family on the Olympic peninsula near Port Orchard, Washington.

Limiteds, Locals, and Expresses in Indiana, 1838-1971 (Railroads Past and Present) Limiteds, Locals, and Expresses in Indiana, 1838-1971 (Railroads Past and Present)
Author: Craig Sanders, George M. Smerk (Editor)
Publisher: Indiana University Press; (June 2003)
The passenger train has long held a special place in the imagination of Americans, and Indiana was once a bustling passenger train crossroads. Limiteds, Locals, and Expresses in Indiana, 1838?1971 brings to life the countless locals, accommodation trains, and secondary expresses that Hoosiers patronized during the Golden Age of the passenger train. Craig Sanders gives us a comprehensive history of intercity passenger service in Indiana, from the time railroads began to develop in the state in the mid-19th century through May 1, 1971, when Amtrak began operations. Each chapter summarizes the history and development of one railroad, discusses the factors that shaped that railroad's passenger service?such as prolonged financial difficulties, competition, and the influence of a strong leader?and concludes with a detailed account of its passenger operations in Indiana. Sixteen maps, 87 photographs, and other evocative illustrations supplement Sanders's text.
