Norfolk Southern 1995 Review Norfolk Southern 1995 Review
Author: Scott Lindsey
Publisher: Hundman Publishing; (August 1, 1995)
The purpose of this book is to review Norfolk Southern's current operations and how they have developed since 1982. Plenty has been written (deservingly) over the years about its steam program, but relatively little has been printed about the other 99.9 percent of NS activities. Although many scorn the black paint on the locomotives, NS's operations are very worthy of observation and go a long way toward explaining its success.

The first section provides a brief review of NS's nine operating divisions. It is followed by four chapters describing how N&W and Southern integrated their operations over several key routes and gateways. A chapter is also devoted to the Thoroughbred Shortline Program, plus NS abandonments since the merger. Other chapters focus on current train designations and intermodal schedules. The book concludes with a complete roster of current NS locomotives and the dispositions that have occurred since 1982.

Northern Pacific Classic Steam Era Northern Pacific Classic Steam Era
Author: Lorenz P. Shrenk, Robert L. Frey
Publisher: Hundman Publishing; (October 1, 1997)
The Northern Pacific Railway, selected by Trains Magazine as the All-American Railroad was one of the country's great transcontinental railroads. It was created as a national venture, supported by the national government through immense grants of land. The railroad was responsible for opening a large region of the country to settlement and development. It was also the leader in the evolution of the steam locomotive, for the small American 4-4-0s to the huge steel monsters that hauled long trains of freight and people across the continent.

This volume focuses on the years 1905 through 1925 and the locomotives acquired during these years, focusing on the challenges, triumphs and disasters. The carefully researched and written text is enhanced by over 340 specifically chosen photographs from the work of some of the country's best known rail photographers including, Nixon, McGee, Fredrickson, and Hastings. Brought to you by the publishers of N-Scale Magazine, Mainline Modeler, and CTC Board magazines.

Pennsylvania Railroad (Railroad Color History) Pennsylvania Railroad (Railroad Color History)
Author: Mike Schafer, Brian Solomon, Michael Blaszak
Publisher: Motorbooks International
At its peak the Pennsylvania was the largest railroad in the world. It operated 28,000 miles of track, directly served half of the US, and hauled more freight and passengers than any other railroad in the world. This colorful tribute to the Pennsylvania Railroad, the keystone of American transportation for 121 years, is filled with Pennsys crack passenger trains, including the Broadway Limited and Pennsylvania Limited, which connected New York City and Philadelphia with Pittsburgh, St. Louis, and Chicago. Blaszak has filled this book with archive and color photos of the locomotives, trains and events of the Pennsylvania Railroad from the 1950s and 60s.

Pennsylvania Railroad at Bay: William Riley McKeen and the Terre Haute & Indianapolis Railway Pennsylvania Railroad at Bay: William Riley McKeen and the Terre Haute & Indianapolis Railway
Author: Richard T. Wallis
Publisher: Indiana Univ Press
The Pennsylvania Railroad at Bay is the story of an independent and creative 19th-century Indiana businessman, William Riley McKeen, and the railroad that he built based in Terre Haute -- the Terre Haute & Indianapolis Railroad. It is also the story of a small-town entrepreneur who held the mighty Pennsylvania Railroad at bay, refusing to sell out before he was ready to do so. Until now, the TH&I has been something of an enigma for historians of the Pennsylvania Railroad. They have often ignored or failed to understand the fact that the Terre Haute road remained independent for so long. Unlike similar relations with its other western lines -- such as the Indiana Central and the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne & Chicago -- the Pennsy's early courtship of the TH&I did not lead to the usual 'smothering embrace,' as author Wallis puts it. Instead, what he calls an 'arm's length's partnership' endured between the two vastly different organizations. This volume is a long-overdue look at that partnership and the man who, against all odds, kept it in balance. Wallis has made a fascinating contribution to the railroad history of Indiana, to the story of the Pennsylvania Railroad, and to the history of Terre Haute and one of its most interesting businessmen.
