Santa Fe Route, The (Railroads of Arizona) Santa Fe Route, The (Railroads of Arizona)
Author: David F. Myrick
Publisher: Signature Press; 1 edition (July 1, 1998)
From the beginning of construction in 1881, through the end of pioneer days and well into the twentieth century, this railroad was vital to the growth of towns such as Winslow, Flagstaff, and Kingman, and was also an important factor in the development of Arizona and the West. A rich railroad history is presented in this book, from early construction days and the problems of operation through an arid and difficult territory, to steam and, later, diesel locomotives and their trains of various eras. Illustrated with a superb collection of rare and historic photographs, this is an outstanding addition to the Arizona series.

Tall Tales of the Rails: On the Carolina, Clinchfield, & Ohio Tall Tales of the Rails: On the Carolina, Clinchfield, & Ohio
Author: Tamara Geisert (Illustrator), James L. Lonon, James W. Mintz (Editor)
Publisher: Overmountain Press; 1st edition edition (January 1, 1989)
??sit back, relax, and let?s begin our trip on the old-fashioned train. We will start at Elkhorn City, Kentucky, and won?t stop until we reach Spartanburg, South Carolina.? This is really a trip back in time, centered around one of the most remarkable railroad lines in the eastern part of the U.S. Making brief commentary about specific locations along the scenic route, Lonon includes some interesting bits of history.

Along with a brief biographical sketch of George L. Carter, there are brief sketches about J. Fred Johnson and John B. Dennis and their association with him in building the railroad. The author shares numerous anecdotes. Some are from his childhood in the Blue Ridge Mountains, through which the train ran; others are from later years, after he began his railroading career.

The latter half of the book is filled with Clinchfield Memorabilia. This is in addition to numerous photographs and illustrations, with one found on almost every page throughout the first part. The author?s love for The Clinchfield is obvious. Thanks in part to this volume, the memory of this phenomenon ??and its great history will be passed on?as one of the great accomplishments in the creation of this great country.?

The Lawndale Railway & Industrial Company The Lawndale Railway & Industrial Company
Author: Matthew Bumgarner
Publisher: Tarheel Press; (November 1999)
The Lawndale was one of North Carolina's shortest but most storied narrow gauge railroads. Weighing in at less than 10 miles in length, the Dummy Line was the product of textile tycoon Major Henry Franklin Schenck. The critically acclaimed book has 102 pages, as well as over 60 photos (many from the Schenck family scrapbook) and numerous maps.

On November 11, 1899, the first regular train of the Lawndale Railway & Industrial Company ran on newly laid narrow gauge tracks from Lawndale to Shelby, NC. Major H.F. Schenck's dream of a railroad to circumvent the muddy wagon roads to his mill had finally been realized.

Hauling lumber, raw materials, fertilizer, and finished mill products as well as passengers, the Lawndale Dummy connected the isolated Carolina foothills to the rest of the world.

The road followed the First Broad River valley for less than 12 miles and became a legend in the area as much for the people involved as for the diminutive cars and locomotives. Farmers in their fields grew used to the chugging of the engines, the whistles and bells, and the thick smoke and cinders.

By 1943, the line was truly history, its work taken over by cars and trucks. But memories remain, stories become embellished, details forgotten. For those who let the coal smoke get in their blood, the Lawndale Railway will always be an important part of North Carolina heritage
