| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com Val Kilmer stars as Lt. Col. John Patterson, a 19th-century Irish engineer drafted by Britain's railroad bosses to build a trestle bridge over an African river, thus expanding the empire a tiny bit more. In Tsavo, Patterson is instantly hailed for killing a man-eating lion that had been making life hell for native workers. But morale sinks when a pair of unstoppable big cats devour more men and destroy the project. Along comes an Ahab-like, expatriate American hunter (Michael Douglas) to help Patterson face the almost preternatural powers of the two killers. The script by William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) is based on fact, though the film owes more to Spielberg (specifically to Jaws) than history. There are also suggestive echoes of Kipling and Conrad in the material and characters, and there are hints of emotional complexity and psychological nuance that make one wish this could have been a great film instead of a merely fun one. --Tom Keogh
Product Description A renowned big game hunter joins forces with an engineer to kill the lions which threaten completion of a bridge in 1896 East Africa.

Good adventure movie and cast, but not for the squeamish.. August 18, 2010 Marie 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Interesting movie loosely based on a true story,
has a beautiful soundtrack,breathtaking scenery
and Val Kilmer is intriguing as Colonel Patterson
(the author of the Man Eaters of Tsavo).I have the
widescreen dvd no problems but it was a gift so this review
is for the movie only.
The lion attacks become more frequent and the workers on the railroad
are turning on Patterson, after several failed attempts to kill the lions
big game hunter Remington(Michael Douglas)
is brought in with skilled Maasai warriors, much to everyone's
frustration even Remington and the Maasai fail, when Patterson's rifle
fails to fire, the warriors said the lions could not be killed
"they are THe ghost and THe darkness, demons in
the form of lions".(revealing anymore would spoil the ending
for those who haven't seen the movie.)
Some scenes in the movie are intense and gory,& tends to overshadow
the the good storyline. Not for kids.Since I have the dvd
I just forward over those parts, and is worth watching again
from time to time.
A bit of trivia, this movie is similar to the 1952 B movie Bwana Devil
with Robert Stack..
Great movie but EXTREMELY BAD DVD. July 5, 2010 aabdraff57 (USA) The movie itself is brilliant. The 109 minutes went by seamlessly and you'd look forward to discovering what would happen next. I won't piggy-back on other great reviews about this movie since almost all of the positive reviews are spot on.
The DVD however, is excruciatingly bad!! It presented the movie as a rectangle on my 32" HDTV. Paramount should have done better especially considering this movie won an Academy Award for Best Sound Effects Editing in 1996.
GREAT MOVIE May 28, 2010 Dorothy J. Longo (englewood cliffs nj) this is a great movie
I have seen it about 10 times
Amazon has always sent my movies and tapes in a timely fastion and I am pleased with them

This is a first class adventure film. Superbly and imaginatively directed and conveying real suspense.
The film benefits from its realism and amazingly there's no CGI in respect of the lions. It's the real deal. This film is one of a kind, it hasn't dated a bit
and is highly recommended. The location filming in Africa makes it come alive and the excellent cast delivers the goods even if
Michael Douglas "chews the scenery" a bit. Bear in mind its a true story.
Great Movie May 3, 2010 Gerald J. Saltzman 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is one of the best movies ever. However the picture quality was poor and the movie was in letterbox, which I hate. I was expecting better. I have a VHS tape that shows better on my LCD HD Television than this DVD did. DISAPPOINTED!!!
