Spotlighted are Electro-Motive's famous E- and F-units, and GP-series "Geeps", DL, PA, FA, and RS diesels from American Locomotive Company, and Baldwin's "babyface" and "sharknose" locomotives. Plus Fairbanks-Morse switchers, passenger diesels, freight locomotives, and more.

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to the world of diesel-electric locomotives   June 8, 2010
Harvey Henkelmann (USA)
'Vintage Diesel Locomotives' is an excellent book for the person who is interested in first-generation diesel locomotives (i.e. the locomotives that directly replaced steam on North American railroads) Examples from all the early diesel locomotive builders are found here, such as EMD, ALCO, Baldwin, Lima, and Fairbanks-Morse.

This book is , apart from being a visual feast, a great introduction to thesubject of Diesel Locomotives as were used on American Railroads.
There is sufficient detail to really wet ones appetite for more.
The photographs are of a high quality and the text itself makes for a good read.
I couldn't put it down until I had finished reading the entire book in a single sitting.

"Vintage Diesel Locomotives" covers the history of diesels in North America from beginnings in the 1930s through 1969. There are many nice color photos and a few black-and-whites. The text is highly readable and not overly ponderous or technical. All major diesel builders are covered: General Motors/EMD, General Electric, American Locomotive (Alco), Baldwin/Lima-Hamilton, and Fairbanks-Morse (F-M). The chapters I found most interesting were on Alco, Baldwin, and F-M, since those companies are long defunct. My favorite photos are of Alco PAs and Century 855s, Baldwin "babyfaces" and "sharknoses," the F-M H-24-66 ("TrainMaster"), the EMD DDA40X, and GE U50Cs. While not many production figures are given and not every single model is shown, all significant ones are mentioned, and some are shown more than once. The different paint schemes are just as interesting as the engines. Mike Schafer certainly did his homework. For a general overview of early diesels, this is a very nice little book; your money will be well spent on it. --- Paul H!
