When work began on the US Interstate Highway System in 1956, it spelled the end of an era for the country’s passenger railroads. But during the first half of the twentieth century, trains were the mainstay of American long-distance travel. Amtrak was still a long way off, and numerous private rail companies served different regions of the nation. In their competition to attract riders, the various companies hired accomplished artists to create posters conveying the excitement of trains and the beauty of the destinations they reached. This calendar celebrates the glory days of US rail travel with reproductions of a dozen posters tempting travelers to routes all across the country. All aboard!
