Amazon.com Swordfights, battles, and betrayal fuel The Last Legion, which tells the story of the last emperor of Rome: a slight 12-year-old boy who is a descendent of Julius Caesar. Protected by commander Aurelius (Colin Firth) and guided to an extent by the wizard Ambrosinus (Ben Kingsley), Romulus (Thomas Sangster) is an unlikely leader. Too inexperienced to rule wisely, he also shows little of the fortitude and courage needed to be a great warrior. After Romulus finds Caesar's sword--the legendary excaliburnus--he begins a search for the fabled last legion that will help him save Rome. Directed by Doug Lefler and produced by Dino De Laurentiis, the film has a clunky feel, thanks to uneven dialogue and fight sequences that are tepid at best. Portraying a female warrior, Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai is a beauty but unconvincing in her athletic skills. Kingsley makes the most of his role, chewing up the scenery and doing the best he can with some laughable lines. But Firth is out of his element here. More thinking man than action hero, the charming Brit is sorely miscast in this movie, which would've benefited from having better CGI animation and, just as importantly, a more developed script. With its broad strokes and lack of character development, The Last Legion actually would've worked better as a half-hour Saturday morning cartoon than a feature-length epic. --Jae-Ha Kim

Wonderful Story! August 3, 2008 Great story, wonderful acting, believable actors! If you like the different Arthurian legends, this movie is for you. Younger(age 9-12)children like it to. Enjoy!
The Last Legion July 30, 2008 Though the historical accuracy of this film is questionable, this is an excellent depiction of some of the last days of the Roman Empire. I question the historical accuracy because it was the Lombards, and not the Goths, which caused the final fall of the Roman Empire. And Hadrian's Wall & all of Britain had been abandoned by the Romans long before the final collapse of Rome. However, a 12 year old Thomas Sangster provides an excellent portrayal of the last Roman emperor & does an outstanding job in this role. This movie is well worth the money.
I feel sorry for Colin and Ben.. July 27, 2008 This is one BORING STORYLINE with a plot that meanders through rubbish! I cannot understand why Colin Firth and Ben Kingsley, both great actors, accepted these silly roles. In my opinion they have have severely compromised their reputations by appearing in this last LEPER [not legion, because this movie is like a disease, that worsens as the scenes progress] film.Somebody ought to tell ashwarya rai that she needs to leave hollywood alone and go back to dazzling her devotees in bollywood. ash cannot cope with western roles. she does deliver her lines in an effective manner. was the director too spellbound by her beauty that he could not see all the flaws in her wooden performance. the woman should stick to the world of modelling and dancing around trees in bollywood.
A Hideous Historical Action Movie July 18, 2008 I bought this movie when it first came out and , based on what I saw in the trailers, expected a great action movie. I was sorely disappointed. A weak plot that starts in Italy and wanders over to Britain, with no purpose other than to put another spin on the Arthur legend is the largest of this film's problems, but poor acting and a low budget don't help either. In fact, the "Last Legion" portrayed in this movie never number more than a dozen or so, and the final confrontation is far from epic as the cover would lead you to believe. For a much better take on a "historical" Arthur legend, I recommend the recent "King Arthur" movie with Clive Owen.
Tepid approval July 17, 2008 I understand the viewpoint of the reviewers who hated this movie, but I didn't think it was that bad. It deals with a fascinating period of history that I've never seen treated before, the sets and costumes were absolutely first-rate, and even though I didn't think Mr. Darcy could pull off the role of a grizzled warrior, I thought he did a good job. Yeah, it was cheesy, cliched and p.c. in parts, but I think it had a fresh take on things and was mildly entertaining.
