Amazon.com Product Description
The award-winning original LeapFrog Leapster handheld takes it up a notch with the Leapster L-Max for kids ages 4 to 10 years. This handheld features dual-screen action (players interact with the handheld screen and watch the results on their TV screen), multiple skill levels, tailored tutorials, and unlimited potential for educational fun. Slip in one of Leapster's many separately sold software games ("Letters on the Loose," "Rock the World," "Madagascar," "Dora the Explorer Wildlife Rescue," etc.) and follow spoken instructions. Youngsters won't even realize they're learning how to write their letters, identifying plants and animals, recognizing mathematical concepts, matching shapes, performing logical reasoning, mastering diphthongs, and even expressing ideas musically and artistically!

L-Max Box
Plug the toy into a TV for dual-screen action—and twice the fun!
In case you didn't catch that, this groovy teaching toy can be hooked up directly to a TV (necessary cables are included) so that kids can experience all the fun and learning on a bigger screen. When hooked up to a television, the system goes into dual-screen mode: the L-Max puts one image on the TV and a second one on its own screen, allowing players to interact with the handheld while they watch the action unfold above. An example would be the players writing the letter B on the handheld game and then seeing an animated dance the B does on the TV screen. This action is controlled by using the multi-directional control pad or by placing the attached stylus directly to the toy's interactive touch screen. When a TV is not handy (possibly when traveling between destinations) the portable game can be played in single screen mode. The full color system features a backlit screen for easy viewing and a headphone jack for quiet play.

Leapster L-Max
comfortably shaped for little hands with safe, rounded edges and small enough to store or travel easily.
The Leapster L-Max helps teach through four exciting modes:
Educational Game Player. Lets players learn essential school skills with leveled games that teach reading, math, and critical thinking skills.
Digital Art Studio. Encourages creative thinking with dozens of art tools and step-by-step lessons that let children draw, write, and create anything they can imagine.
Electronic Book Reader. Inspires a love for reading via electronic storybooks that teach literacy skills, story comprehension, vocabulary, and phonetic awareness.
Interactive Video Player. Develops fundamental reading and math skills by playing interactive videos that encourage children to participate in the action.

The device itself is comfortably shaped for little hands with safe, rounded edges, and is small enough to store and travel easily. Games offer multiple skill levels and teach kids letters, words, plants, animals, shapes, and basic math. The L-Max requires special cartridges (sold separately) for dual-screen play, but can work with existing Leapster titles. Older titles won't play on dual screens, though, and may not project to the TV. Four AA batteries are required, but not included.

Product Description
Turn your TV into a maximum learning machine! Maximize the learning by connecting the Leapster L-Max handheld directly to your TV for expanded play. The full Leapster and Leapster L-Max library allow your child to play action-packed games while learning essential preschool through 4th grade skills. Requires 4 "AA" batteries (not included). Measures 6.25" x 4.25" x 1.75". L-Max software sold separately.

5 out of 5 stars Leapfrog replaced it free, no questions asked AFTER the warranty had expired!   July 16, 2008
We purchased an LMAX for our five year old for Christmas, and she loved it. It worked wonderfully for the first 5 months or so, then the screen just went- you could hear the game going, but the screen was blank. We put in a call to Leapfrog, they told us to send it in. We did, and exactly 1 week later, went outside and tripped over a brand new one in a box on our front step. To top it off, the new one had a screen cover on it, whereas ours hadn't had one. We were so impressed. The warranty was only supposed to be 90 days, we were well past that, and the turn-around time was amazing. The customer service was impeccable. I strongly recommend this product for many reasons (oh, and if you look up leapfrog coupon codes on google, I'd be willing to bet you'll find one that will make it worth your time! ;) )

4 out of 5 stars Perfect Traveling Entertainment   June 12, 2008
I bought this L-Max for my 5 year old over a year ago & she has really enjoyed it. Very handy for long trips. We've hooked it up to our tv, but very rarely use that feature. Wish there was a larger variety of games for the L-Max that is tailored for girls. Great for younger children, but would not recommend this for children over the age of 7. My oldest child has a Nintendo and my youngest is starting to play with it more often than her L-Max.

3 out of 5 stars Good but...   May 22, 2008

The leapster lets your child feel like they are playing video games, but you feel good because they are learning.
However, it's a pricey toy that gets played with for a short while, and then forgotten.

Leapfrog customer service is awful, and not customer focused, so my review of any of their products is tainted by my experience with the company. If you don't deal with them and your product never breaks, you'll be lucky. : )

My recommendation is spend more time reading and playing with your child, and save $80-100. They will learn how to read, write and add just as fast.

5 out of 5 stars Leapster L-Max   May 15, 2008
Fantastic product! Simple enough for my 3 yr old to use and still entertaining for my 11 yr old. The inbuilt games are great and the option of having it plugged into the t.v. is fantastic. Make sure you buy good quality rechargable batteries as they do run out pretty fast.

4 out of 5 stars Getting to know our new Leapster.   May 6, 2008
Two weeks ago we received this toy for our two sons aged three and seven, on ebay for US $113, we live in Australia. Our three year old has not become very interested in it. Our seven year old enjoys the games designed for the 4 - 6 year olds, rather than those aimed at his own age group. He does not spend a lot of time playing with it. Our set is red, and comes with a cover. It may be old stock.

The new set of four AA batteries we added in lasted two days, so I have purchased a 9 V powerpack from an electronics store. The powerpack came with a range of adaptors, and the larger size fitted the Leapster. I selected the lower powered option, and this is fine. I paid US$17 for this. I don't know if its possible to get a car adaptor for the Leapster.

I can't review the games so far. The L-MAX games work well on the TV via the long AV cable provided with the set. My initial experience appears to be that the games are educational, but the kids have not spent a lot of time with them. The pen button for TV use is beyond our three year old's capability as you have to touch the screen and click the pen button at the same time. It takes some concentrating at first. We haven't experienced any problems with the games.

We found an old mini-backpack to keep our Leapster safe and this has a small pocket for the games.

The four directional button on the left hand side does not work effectively, as when you select "down" it frequently activates "left" as well. This means your rabbit may move sideways instead of down!
