In the first of three stories, big red engine James faces the consequences of a tantrum, finds himself getting teased, and makes a friend when he helps another engine in need. A frustrated James slams his coaches together and breaks their connection, forcing passengers to deboard until one rider reluctantly gives up his bootlace for the repair. James feels bad for letting the train line down and gets two chances to redeem himself in the following stories. Thomas conducts his own mischief when he makes a break for it without his conductor, goes fishing in the river thereby giving himself a "pain in his boiler," and teases Terence the Tractor for his "ugly wheels." Of course, Thomas has to eat his words and concede that "caterpillars are splendid" when he becomes snowbound and needs the tractor to dig him out. Finally, Thomas and Bertie have a trademark Thomas-style race, with their conductors' blessing and participation. --Kimberly Heinrichs

5 out of 5 stars A Must-have Thomas video!   October 29, 2004
1 out of 2 found this review helpful

This is Thomas' second video and it is one of the best ones. It introduced Bertie and Terrance and it also introduced James a little more than they did in Vol.1, in fact, the first three episodes are about James. Thats good news if your a James fan like me. The last four episodes are all about Thomas. Most of them are great stories to. The story stops are:

James Learns A Lesson 5/5:
When James bangs his coaches to much since he is mad because he thinks he should be the most important engine because of his bright red paint, his coach coach must be mended with, of all things, a passengers bootlace.

Foolish Freight Cars 5/5:
Sir Topham Hatt finally lets James come out of the shed after his incident with his coaches. He must pull some freight cars and the freight cars say that James will not be able to pull them up Gordon's hill. Determined not to let them win, James gives it all he's got-with surprising results.

A Proud Day For James 5/5:
Gordon brags that he is the only engine strong enough to pull the express. But when he is unable to do it one day, James will have to do it.

Thomas and the Conductor 4/5:
When Thomas is in a hurry to get his passengers to the station, he accidentally leaves his conductor behind. This will cause Thomas to be even later.

Thomas Goes Fishing 4.5/5:
Thomas has always wanted to go fishing but all the other engines say,"Engines don't go fishing." One day when Thomas is thirsty and the water tank is out of order, he'll have to get water out of the river. But when Thomas starts feeling weird and his driver looks in to his tank, he'll be surprised at what he finds.

Terence the Tractor 5/5:
Thomas makes fun of Terence and says he has ugly gray wheels, but who will come and rescue Thomas when he gets stuck in a snow drift.

Thomas and Bertie's Great Race 4.5/5:
Thomas meets Bertie and challenges him to a race. At first Thomas thinks he does'nt have a chance against him, but with a little encouragement from Annie and Clarabel, Thomas just might be able to catch up to Bertie and win the race after all.

Again, awesome Thomas video. I liked the first two Volumes because they didn't have Percy in them and once Percy came, it became all about him. If you want to buy a Thomas video, treat yourself to this one, it's better than some of those other ones like Spills & Chills.

This video is pretty boring for the most part. Features the debuts of Terence and Bertie.

5 out of 5 stars A True Thomas the Tank Engine Classic!   June 27, 2004

The second, I believe, of American Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends videos. Featuring 7 season 1 episodes narrated by the show's first narrator: Ringo Starr, it is truely wonderful. The episodes are classics, well written, based on the stories by the Rev. W. Awdry who created the books the show originally was based on. The music is well done, and it has that 80's synthesizer sound to it. The scenery is well done too. James Learns a Lesson, A Proud Day for James, and Thomas Goes Fishing are fantastic episodes. My copy is very old, and has the original cover art, and I can assure you I am looking forward to buying a replacement! Treat your children, or even yourself to a true classic and buy this instead of rubbish like Spills & Chills. Pity it is only on VHS.

5 out of 5 stars 2nd of the "Thomas and Friends" Collection   December 5, 2003

James Learns a Lesson is a wonderful 2nd video of its series. The first three stories are focused on James, and the other 4 of 7 are on Thomas.

The story stops are as follows:

James Learns a Lesson- James, the new engine, gets in trouble for spoiling Sir Topham Hatt's hat, and then makes a memorable bump in the coaches which had to be mended with one of the passenger's bootlaces!

Foolish Freight Cars- James had been shut up for misbehaving in the previous story, and comes out and has trouble with the cars, but in the end, Sir Topham Hatt is proud of him.

A Proud Day for James- James is much better behaved and helps Gordon with coaches for his special journey. But when Gordon unexpectedly comes back, James has to take his train...

Thomas and the Conductor- After being impatient waiting for Henry to bring his train, Thomas causes trouble when he inadvertently leaves his conductor behind.

Thomas Goes Fishing- "I want to go fishing," said a silly Thomas. The engines make fun of him, and when he becomes thirsty, he gets a surprise!

Terence the Tractor- Terence is a tractor and proud of it. Thomas has an argument with him. When he is stubborn and careless,(which lead to getting stuck in snow), Terence comes to his rescue.

Thomas and Bertie's Great Race- A classic, memorable moment. When Thomas meets a bus, Bertie, and boasts to him, Bertie challenges him to a race.

It is a wonderful collection, narrated by ex-Beatle, Ringo Starr, everything will be sure to heartwarm you!

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Thomas Tape   October 19, 2003
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

Thomas would not be the same without this tape. It showed James as one of the engines and it showed him learning to be a really useful engine. In many other tapes it shows James though smaller than Gordon and Henry as a big engine. He helps Gordon and Henry when they make a point. James is also one of the most popular engines. It also shows the Great Race between Thomas and Bertie. That was one of the most well known events in Thomas history. Their race has been mentioned many times. This is a really good tape. The episodes are James Learns a Lesson, Foolish Freight Cars, A Proud Day for James, Thomas and the Conductor, Thomas goes Fishing, Terence the Tractor, and Thomas and Bertie's Great Race.
