We like it! January 8, 2008 I was a little leary about ordering this because some reviewers reported having problems with it, but it seemed like the best overall deal for a Christmas train, and the most Christmasy.
We love it. It takes some careful eye-hand coordination to make sure it's actually on the track, but all model trains require that.
We're a two-adult/one-dog household, and the dog isn't interested in the train, so it doesn't face much of a survival challenge. I can see where in a household with multiple kids it could get damaged easily. It has lots of plastic parts--many moving--and I can see it getting broken by uncareful hands--or feet.
A Family Tradition January 5, 2008 We have owned this train for about 6 years. Our first grandson was young enough (2 or 3 years old) that this was a "look, don't touch" decoration. Grampa was the train engineer. Now 8 years old, our grandson this year was the engineer and enjoyed showing the operation to his cousin, age 3. Lining up the cars and keeping things on track requires patience (of both adults and children). We have 5 cars in addition to the locomotive with coal tender.
As with most model trains, it is a delicate operation which needs to be supervised by adults. It has been a great teaching tool, encouraging slow, deliberate actions, and the train has proven durable with proper care.
This is a great item for grandparent's house. Young children will want to play with this constantly because it is so much fun, but parents may not have the time to provide that supervision.
Great Train Set! January 4, 2008 This is a great train set. We have owned ours for 5 years with no problems. We run it under our Christmas tree each year, and the kids love it. The detail and little moving elves, etc... are amazing. We've purchased additional cars and track each year to expand the set. It has become a real family tradition.
The big train January 2, 2008 We ordered this train to put it under the tree, when we got it we were surprise of how big it was, very cute, with lots of details but very loud and large for what we wanted for. You'll need a large space for this train, each car is between 10-12 inches long and about 6-7 inches tall and the tracks are at least 6 ft by 4ft. It has different lights & sounds but are very loud and even when you turn it down it doesn't help much. It's a beautifull train, and a great price but we returned because of the size, think about it, returning it can cost you $30-$60, it comes in a huge box!!
Decorative fun for grandparents to show. January 1, 2008 Four years ago I bought this for my husband who always wanted a Christmas train around the tree. It suits us fine and still works well. It is not, however, a toy for children to play with as it does derail easily. It is for decorative purposes especially in grandparents' houses. We love the iceskating water tank. I plan to get the bakery next year. I bought some extra tracks as I have broken a couple of them pulling them apart. They still work, but they're fragile.
